Cookie & Tracking Notice
The cookies, local storage, and tracking bits Wait, What? may use, and how you can turn the optional ones down.
1. What this notice covers
“Cookies” here means cookies, pixels, local storage, session storage, SDKs, tags, and similar technologies that store or read information on your device or in your browser when you use Wait, What?.
2. Why we use these technologies
- Essential / functional: security, load balancing, remembering privacy and motion preferences, basic site operation
- Analytics: understanding visits, popular stories, and technical performance
- Advertising & measurement: delivering ads, limiting how often you see them, measuring campaigns, and building audiences when those tools are on
- Embedded content: third-party players (for example, YouTube) that may set their own cookies once loaded
3. Categories we use
Essential
Always active when you use the site. Examples:
ww-consent(local storage): stores your cookie and sale/share choicesww-motion(local storage): stores motion preference- Hosting / CDN / security cookies or headers from providers such as Cloudflare, used to deliver and protect the site
Analytics (optional)
Used only if you allow Analytics in Cookie settings. May include tools such as Google Analytics or similar measurement products. They can collect page views, device info, approximate location, and identifiers.
Advertising (optional)
Used only if you allow Advertising (and have not opted out of sale/share). May include Google Ads, Meta, or other ad/measurement partners. Under some U.S. state laws, this can count as a “sale” or “share” of personal information. Opt out on Your Privacy Choices.
Third-party embeds
YouTube embeds use privacy-enhanced mode where available and load after you press play. Once loaded, Google/YouTube may set cookies and process data under their policies. We do not control those cookies.
4. How long they last
- Session: deleted when you close the browser
- Persistent: stick around for a set period or until you clear them (often months to two years for ad/analytics cookies)
- Local storage preferences: stay until you clear site data or change settings
5. Your controls
- Cookie settings on this site (Accept all / Essential only / Customize)
- Your Privacy Choices including Do Not Sell or Share
- Browser controls to block or delete cookies
- Global Privacy Control (GPC), which we treat as an opt-out of sale/share and advertising cookies where applicable
- Industry opt-outs such as the Digital Advertising Alliance and Network Advertising Initiative
- Google account ad settings and Analytics opt-out browser add-on, when Google tools are in use
Blocking essential storage may break preference saving. Blocking third-party cookies may limit embeds or ads.
6. How this ties to ads and analytics compliance
Before non-essential analytics or advertising tags run, our site checks your stored choices via a small preference script. Future tags should only load when the matching category is allowed. That supports U.S. notice-and-choice expectations and partner requirements that expect a consent or opt-out signal before ad/analytics cookies fire.
7. Updates
We may update this notice when we add or change technologies. Check the “Last updated” date above. The full data practices are in the Privacy Policy.
